August 15: Nagatoro Funatama Festival
August 15: The Nagatoro Funatama Festival is a summer tradition in the Chichibu region, drawing crowds of about 70,000 people each year. It is said to have originated when boatmen on the river dedicated offerings to the water deity to pray for safety on the water.
Lanterns float down the Arakawa River, boats decorated with paper lanterns drift on the water, and at night, more than 3,000 fireworks are launched from the opposite bank each year, drawing applause from the crowd for their beauty and grandeur.
Be sure to enjoy the lights of the floating lanterns reflected on the river’s surface, the majestic lantern boats, and the fireworks on the opposite shore that light up the night sky.
